Grow in Danville city initiative to constantly evaluate and manage green assets to maximize ecology, economy, and culture.
How did this get started?
On behalf of the City of Danville, Public Works applied for a first-year program called the Community Forest Revitalization Program (CFRP) offered by the Virginia Department of Forestry. CFRP provided the services of the Green Infrastructure Center (GIC), a non-profit organization, to work with selected Virginia communities for two years to evaluate and manage green assets. The four selected cities were: Danville, Martinsville, Petersburg, and Hopewell.
Since August 2024, the GIC assisted in developing a Tree Canopy Advisory Council (TCAC) to attend monthly workshops. The TCAC is composed of both City employees and community representatives from Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Engineering, Information Technology, Community Development, Dan River Basin Association, Virginia Cooperative Extension, and the West Piedmont Planning District Commission.
