Functions

The City Council is empowered to adopt and enforce legislative and budgetary ordinances, policies, rules, and regulations necessary to conduct the public's business and to provide for the protection of the general health, safety, and welfare of the public.

The Council sets policy and appoints the City Manager, City Attorney, City Clerk, and a variety of boards and commissions necessary to operate local government. All ordinances are codified and are available for public inspection in the Office of the City Clerk.

Monthly Business Meetings

City Council conducts its monthly business meetings on the first and third Tuesday at 7 p.m. in City Council Chambers in downtown Danville. It is at the first business meeting that most public hearings occur and where Council acts on issues it discussed at the previous month's work session. The business meetings are televised by the local cable provider and may be seen on River City TV. Broadcasts are also streamed live on Facebook.

Work Sessions

City Council conducts its work sessions as needed in the City Council Conference Room on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building. City Council conducts its nuts and bolts business at the work session. Items that appear at the work session, if approved by Council, are formally presented at a future monthly business meeting for formal action. A short business meeting is held at 7 p.m. immediately prior to the work session to conduct any carryover business from a previous meeting. The work session convenes immediately after the business meeting adjourns.

Public Attendance at Meetings

The public is cordially invited to attend the meetings and work sessions of the City Council. Any person wishing to appear before the City Council may appear at the meeting and present his or her concerns. In order to speak on any item not on the agenda, citizens should register with the City Clerk through the Public Comment form or by phone at 434-797-8928 by 12pm on the Friday before a meeting.

Anyone wishing to formally present information to the City Council, particularly presentations which would require Council action, should contact the City Manager's Office at 434-799-5100 or appear in person at the City Manager's Office on the Fourth Floor of the Municipal Building in downtown Danville.
