Short-Term Rentals  

A Short-Term Rental is defined as Any furnished residential-property that provides sleeping accommodations for monetary compensation for thirty (30) or fewer consecutive days. This definition specifically excludes other businesses licensed with the City or State like bed and breakfast establishments, hotels, and motels.

Operation of a Short-Term Rental requires a City of Danville business license and a zoning clearance for each rental address.

Steps for approval

  1. Review zoning and rental regulations to determine compliance and type of use.
  2. If the Short-Term Rental is the principal use of structure then a Special Exception Permit is necessary. | Application
  3. A Certificate of Occupancy is necessary and is obtained from the Department of Community Development - Division of Building Inspections. | Rental Checklist (PDF)

    Short Term Rental Technician

COMPLIANT SHORT TERM RENTAL PROCESS

1. Complete Special Exception Permit

  • This Permit comes with a fee of $250.00 for advertisement of the Short-Term Rental. Payment must be made in order to reserve a time slot to be heard on the following Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) agenda.

2. Schedule and pass Certificate of Occupancy Inspection.

  • The property of the Short-Term Rental must pass a physical inspection with a city appointed inspector. An inspection can be scheduled in person at City Hall, 427 Patton St. Suite 208 or you can call Arsenio Day 434.799.5260 EXT.2490 to schedule an inspection.
  • Inspection should be passed before your hearing date in front of the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA). If the inspection was not passed, your case will be, at the very least, postponed or may even be denied approval.
  • The Certificate of Occupancy comes with a fee of $50.00.

3. Appear Before Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) For approval/denial.

  • You will receive a date and time to come before the Board of Zoning Appeals, in which time the property that will be used as a Short-Term Rental will be either approved or denied for operation.
  • If you can not make the hearing, please make sure someone can speak on your behalf. If nobody is present to speak on your behalf, your case may be postponed.

4. Apply for your Short Term Rental Permit

  • This is where you register for a short-term rental permit number.
  • This permit number is specific to each individual Short-Term Rental
  • You will receive this after Approval form the Board of zoning Appeals. This will also come with a fee set by City Council.

5. Apply for a Business License Clearance

  • You can apply for a zoning clearance at City Hall, 427 Patton St. Suite 208
  • You can only apply for this document if you were approved by The Board of Zoning Appeals.
  • You will need this document when you register with the Commissioner of Revenue’s Office.
  • The zoning Clearance comes with a fee of $20.00

6. Register with the Commissioner of Revenue

  • Lastly, after completing the aforementioned steps, you will need to register with the Commissioner of Revenue’s Office.
  • Please make sure to bring your Zoning Clearance receipt with you.
  • The address for this office is 311 Memorial Dr. It is in the utility building on the second floor.

Task Force Meetings

Our Task Force meetings consist of all the new and updated information on short-term rentals. Meetings are held every 3 months in the City Hall building in the Municipal Conference Room. All are welcome. Questions, comments, concerns and suggestions are encouraged.

Our next task force meeting is on February 24, 2025 from 11:00am - 12:30pm in the 4th floor conference room.


Short-Term Rental (STR) Permit Number

Applications are now being accepted for your permit number. STR permit numbers are required and comes with a $50.00 fee. These permits are subject to annual renewal. You can complete these applications in person at city hall or by contacting Arsenio Day at 434-799-5260 ext. 2490.

The STR Permit Number renewal is due on January 1, 2025. This renewal is required in order to comply with the City of Danville's Zoning Code.
