The primary mission of the Office of Economic Development is to create an environment conducive for job creation, wealth creation, and quality of life improvement in the City of Danville. The Office of Economic Development achieves these goals through new business recruitment, business retention and expansion, and the facilitation of entrepreneurial endeavors, which all come together to enhance the economic well-being of the community.
The Public Works Department consists of five divisions: Administration, Buildings and Grounds Maintenance, Engineering, Sanitation, and Street Maintenance. These divisions cover a wide range of services, including street repair, cemeteries, trash/recycling, code enforcement, traffic signals/signs, and landscaping.

Danville's Mass Transit System offers flexible, convenient and economical service options: operating hours for the transit system are 4 am to 12:30 am, Monday through Saturday, door to door Reserve A Ride service for the general public, half-fare discount is available from 6 am until noon on fixed-route service for seniors, persons with disabilities and Medicare cardholders, and easy-to-use demand-response Handivan service for persons with disabilities.

The City of Danville has been in the utility business since 1876. Danville is the only municipality in Virginia to operate all four essential utilities - electricity, natural gas, water, and wastewater - plus telecommunications services. Danville Utilities serves the City and adjoining residential neighborhoods with water and gas service. Electricity is distributed to 42,000 customer locations in a 500-square mile service area that includes Danville, most of Pittsylvania County’s households, and small portions of Henry and Halifax Counties. Water, wastewater, and natural gas services are provided to customers within a 50-square mile area consisting of the city adjacent suburban areas.
