Words From Home 

A collection of short prose, essays, and poetry by authors from the Danville/ Pittsylvania County region of Virginia.

Organized by the Ruby B. Archie Public Library as part of the Reflections of Home Arts Festival, “Words From Home” will feature a collection of short prose, essays, and poetry by authors from the Danville/ Pittsylvania County region of Virginia.

We feel this publication will provide a unique opportunity not only for writers to receive public recognition for their work, but for our community to engage with art and one another.

Writers of all types are invited to submit a short work for publication. We hope that through various writing forms, genres, and topics; these works will reflect the diversity of our community.

It is our privilege to publish these works, not only to support the many talented individuals that live in our city, but to encourage and cultivate a community that values artistic expression and sees itself reflected within it.

Entries must be:

  • the original, unassisted, unpublished work of the submitting author
  • short fiction prose, short stories-in-verse, poetry, or personal essays
  • 1500 words or less
  • typed and attached as one of the following formats: .doc, .txt, .docx

Authors must:

  • be age 13 or above
  • reside in Danville or Pittsylvania County
  • submit no more than two entries

Submissions will be accepted online beginning Monday, June 2 through Friday, August 29. We will not accept submissions in person.

Participants in this program grant DPL the right to publish their names and any portion of their submitted work in print and electronic publications in connection with the DPL “Words from Home” publication.

Submission does not guarantee inclusion in the publication. A panel of library staff will review each entry. The editors of this publication retain the right to edit any work for grammar and clarity.
