As extreme heat grips the region, the City of Danville is urging residents and visitors who need a place to cool down to call the Emergency Communications Center at 434-799-5111, option 8. The center will connect callers with local organizations offering cooling assistance and support.
The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for Danville, in effect today from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dangerous heat and high humidity are expected to produce heat index values that could lead to serious health risks, especially for vulnerable populations.
Those at highest risk include children, older adults, people with chronic health conditions, and pets. While similar conditions are forecast through the week, temperatures may occasionally be moderated by increasing shower activity.
To stay safe during extreme heat, follow these precautions:
